Surf Coast Knockout spicing up golf on TV

Australia’s newest golf tournament is set to tee off next week with a revolutionary made-for-TV format.

The Surf Coast Knockout switches from stroke play to match play on Sunday afternoon, when a series of 6-hole knockout matches will decide the winner of the tournament. Peter Lonard, Craig Parry and Peter O’Malley will be a part of the 144 man field that starts next week at The Sands Golf Course at Torquay, Victoria.

The four day event will feature a usual cut after 36 holes where the best 50 players and ties will continue playing on the weekend. After Saturday, the field will be further reduced to 32 players who will qualify for the final day of matchplay.

On Sunday the match play format will start with 16 matches starting at 10minute intervals played over 6 holes. the losers will be eliminated, the winners progressing to the next round. The match play format will continue until four players are left who will play the final two matches to determine the first, second, third and fourth placings.

This is a great format. Perfect for TV and the final day is being broadcast live on Channel 10 and One HD. I really hope it is successful and gets noticed around the world.
World golf needs more match play.
