Snedeker slows down to penalise slow golfer: video

Prior to John Senden’s victory at the Valspar Championship, the biggest news to come out of that weekend was a slow play controversy and now Brandt Snedeker has raised a few eyebrows with his recent comments.

Kevin Na is the most well-known slow golfer on the PGA Tour and according to Jeff Rude at Golfweek.com his playing partner’s caddie had a few words to say about him after the round at the Valspar Championship that was eventually won by John Senden.

“It ain’t fair playing with Kevin Na,” said the voice, belonging to Robert Garrigus’ caddie, Brent Henley. “It ain’t fair.”

The veteran caddie would go on to say he thought Na’s slow pace got Garrigus out of his rhythm to the point “we felt like we were running.” Before that, Garrigus was running away on the scoreboard, having birdied three of his first five holes and getting to 10 under par for a four-stroke lead.

But the final twosome of Na and Garrigus was put on the clock on the seventh hole for being out of position. Na got a bad time on the 13th tee and Garrigus, a fast player, received the first bad time of his professional career at 14. As it happened, Garrigus missed two 4-foot par putts on the last seven holes and finished 54 holes one shot up on Na at 8 under.

Perhaps more remarkable were Brandt Snedeker’s comments in the above video from an episode of the Feherty show on the GolfChannel, scheduled to be broadcast this week ( US only).

The revelation that Snedeker deliberately slows down should raise some eyebrows at PGA Tour headquarters, but given their reluctance to do anything to improve the speed of play in the past, don’t hold your breathe for any action.

However Augusta National officials may make another point in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Thanks to Geoff Shackleford for bringin this to our attention.
