Six reasons you should be excited about Australian Open week

The Australian Open has arrived, and here are six reasons you should be excited.

McIlroy v Scott
Adam Scott may have lost his number two world ranking to Henrik Stenson but the prospect of a McIlroy/Scott match-up is mouth-watering. McIlroy pipped Scott on the 72nd hole of the 2013 Australian Open to deny Scott the triple crown, and it left a bitter taste in Scott’s mouth. He will be keen to make amends this year.

Australian Open Radio
This a fantastic, exciting concept. The Australian Open has its very own radio broadcast – Australian Open radio – that golf fans can listen for free via the official Australian Open website, the Android and iPhone apps or through on-course headsets available at The Australian GC.

Free-to-air HD TV coverage
It’s a common complaint among golf fans – the lack of golf on free-to-air TV. And even when there is, some complain it isn’t in high-definition. Well, there shouldn’t be any complaints this week as Channel Seven broadcast the action from the Australian Open every afternoon – in HD. I suppose there will be loads of commercials though.

The Australian Golf Club
Jack Nicklaus won six Australian Open’s, his last three at The Australian Golf Club in 1975, 1976 and 1978. He went on to redesign the golf course, not just once but twice – and his latest tweaks will be on display this week. As one of the most private, toughest golf courses in Australia to step foot on – this will be a rare glimpse for golfers across the country.

Jordan Spieth
This kid is the business. At just 21-years-old, Spieth has already one on the PGA tour, finished in a tie for second at the 2014 Masters and is now ranked number 14 in the world. He is in Sydney for the first time this week to play in the Australian Open. Catch him before he goes on to win a major.

The Aussie young guns
I keep telling people – we’ve got a superb bunch of young golfers nearly ready to crack the big time and several of them are playing in this week’s Australian Open. Keep an eye on Asia-Pacific Amateur champion, Anthony Murdaca, Lucas Herbert, Oliver Goss, Nathan Holman, Ryan Ruffels and Todd Sinnott – not just this week but for the next decade or two.
