2012 Australian Masters: Scott fires early

Adam Scott fires early to lead 2012 Australian Masters.

Without a win in 2012 Adam Scott stated yesterday he is hungry for a victory before the end of the year. In fairly benign conditions at Kingston Heath this morning, Scott showed he meant what he said and fired a 5-under par 67 to take the early lead in the Talisker Australian Masters.

Scott made just the one birdie in his opening nine holes after missing several opportunities with the long putter and made the turn at even with the card. Scott then birdied his next four holes (the 1st – 4th at Kingston Heath) that included a huge 40 foot putt for birdie on the second hole.

“I played good today, it’s a good start, and you need four good days to win I believe. It’s a good start, I didn’t take advantage of my good play on my first 9 holes but I certainly did on my back 9, so that made up for it.”, Scott said.

“The front 9 I just hit a few shots in there nice and close and had some chances but lipped out the putts, and then missed a real short one on 18, out of frustration I think, but then got it together around the turn and made a great putt on 2 and another good one on 4.”

Playing alongside Scott was former US Open champion Graeme McDowell who played consistent golf to finish at 1-under par after the opening round.

WA Open winner Oliver Goss completed the marquee pairing and the amateur Australian impressed Scott despite being a little wayward off the tee.

“I’m very impressed. He didn’t have his best day off the tee certainly, but just managed to make par from everywhere today. It was impressive. He’s got a lot of talent obviously and a tidy little short game too, so he’s going to have a good future for sure.” Scott said of Goss.

  • Great start by Adam Scott.

He’s long overdue for a victory this year.

I’m hoping it starts here at the Masters and he get to put on the gold jacket.
