Papadatos claims first professional victory at 2014 NZ Open: video

Young Australian Dimi Papadatos extends the 12-year-drought for Kiwi’s at their national golf tournament.

The stocks of young Australian golfing talent are looking as plentiful as ever right after New South Welshman Dimi Papadatos claiming his first professional victory at the New Zealand Open at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown yesterday.

Dimi Papadatos began the final day with a one shot lead over the rest of the field that included the experienced home town favourite Mark Brown. However, the 22-year-old member from Toukley and Magenta Shores golf clubs was never headed, Papadatos fired a 6-under 66 final round to finish with a tournament total of 18-under 270, four shots better than Brown.

“Obviously some great players have won this event, it’s a massive honour. I wouldn’t have told you at the start of the week I was capable of this. I’m really happy,” Papadatos said following his victory.

Before the New Zealand Open win, Papadatos’ best result on the PGA Tour of Australasia was a third place finish at the ISPS Handa Perth International last October.

Dimi Papadatos is just one of a growing number of young Australian golfers looking to be the next generation of succesful Aussies on the world golf scene.

With plenty of success from some of our young stars already on the professional tours including Daniel Popovic, Cameron Smith, Jake Higginbottom, Minjee Lee, Nathan Holman, Matt Steiger, Ryan Ruffels and Matthew Murduca, among others, the future looks very bright indeed.
