Geoff Ogilvy wins 2008 Australian PGA Championship

Australia’s most American-like tournament is over and it is somewhat appropriate that some of Australia’s best performers on the US Tour this year battled it out on the final 9 holes for the Australian PGA Championship.

Geoff Ogilvy has won the Australian PGA Championship, his first tournament win in Australia. He finished 2 strokes ahead of Mathew Goggin (one-“t”) who has finished runner-up for the second time at this event.

The event was won (or lost) with bogeys. Ogilvy had four before the final round and played the final round bogey free. Goggin had only five bogeys going into the final round, he had four on Sunday. Three on the back nine.

I think I need to stress it. A great tournament. Yet another great Australian tournament with great golf played. Geoff Ogilvy and Mathew Goggin are Australia’s two best chances at a next major win. Mathew Goggin’s temper has subsided and been replaced with some magical iron play which was a necessity at the Hyatt Coolum which is very much a target golf course. Geoff Ogilvy has now disposed of a perceived (by the Australian public) monkey off his back by winning in Australia.

The problem is that there’s too many great Australian golfers and too few tournaments to win. Everyone has one more chance for the year. Next week’s The Australian Open at Royal Sydney.

  • I think 2009 will be the year that defines Ogilvy’s career. I expect big things from him.

  • You may well be right. I have a suspicion it may define Mathew Goggin’s too.
