Molinari makes hole-in-one; crowd celebrates by throwing beer cans: video

Golf fans shower hole with beer cans after Molicari makes a hole-in-one.

During Saturday’s third round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Italy’s Francesco Molinari made a hole-in-one at the famous 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale. And the crowd went wild.

Nearly 160,000 people attended the third round in 2015 in an event that incredible figures largely due to the stadium-like atmosphere tournament organisers have created at the par-3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona. The grandstands around the 16th hole can hold 30,000 people and create an atmosphere unmatched in professional golf.

Tiger Woods made a famous hole-in-one here in 1997, Jarrod Lyle did it in 2011 but since then the capacity around the hole has increased and the fans have just got louder.

Prior to this week’s event, the PGA tour told golfers that they were not permitted to throw things to the crowd at the 16th as they had done in previous years; such as footballs, hats and golf gear. The reason? Crowd safety.

On wonders whether some of the reaction to Molinari’s hole-in-one was a bit of a reaction to this crazy rule. Or perhaps they just enjoyed the great shot… and were also a little drunk.
