Minjee Lee wins her second LPGA event, at just 19-years-old

Minjee Lee has won he second LPGA Tour event with a one-stroke victory at the 2016 LPGA LOTTE Championship.

The 19-year-old West Australian closed with an 8-under 64 that included a phenomenal 6-under par back nine including a hole-out eagle on the par-5 13th hole to get into the clubhouse at 16-under par. It was enough for Lee to claim the trophy as American Katie Burnett and South Korea’s In Gee Chun could only manage par at the closing holes to finish a shot behind.

Lee was understandably frustrated after a poor third round 74 seemed to put her out of contention, however a chat to her coach overnight seemed to install the confidence to get the job done.

“Yesterday I spoke to my coach and he was like, ‘You’re only five back. Just shoot eight under and you’ll be fine,’” said Lee after her final round. “I think after I went eagle, birdie, birdie, I think the second birdie I was like, Oh, I’m going to be really close. I just did all I could do, and, yeah, here I am.”

World number one Lydia Ko finished well back behind Lee in 23rd place at 5-under par.

Lee is Australia’s highest ranked female golfer and prior to this event was ranked 17th in the world. This victory will most likely see Lee push into the world top-10. At just 19-years, we’re gong to see many more victories from Lee in the coming years.
