Minjee Lee wins fourth LPGA trophy on her 22nd birthday

Minjee Lee has claimed her fourth LPGA victory with a one stroke victory at the Volvik Championhip.

Minjee Lee, on her 22nd birthday needed a birdie at the final hole to secure the win over South Korea’s In-Kyung Kim.

After making the turn with a two shot buffer, the lead had gone by the 17th hole when a three-putt bogey saw Lee needing a birdie at the par-5 18th hole to win.

An awkward second shot almost clipped the trees but her ball finished close to the green where Lee got up-and-down  to claim victory.

“My drive went pretty far. I didn’t expect it to go that far. I had a 5-iron in, but I sort of had to cut it around the tree and I overcut it a little bit,” Lee said after her round.

I was lucky not to clip the very top end of the tree. I had a pretty easy chip shot after that shot.”

The victory is a great confidence boost for Lee who had not won on the tour since victory at the LPGA Blue Bay tournament in 2016 and lost a sudden-death playoff to New Zealand’s Lydia Ko just last month.

Australia’s Su Oh also had a fantatsic tournament finishing in a tie for fourth place, three strokes behind Lee.

The Women’s US Open will take centre stage next week at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Alabama.
