McIlroy signs five-year deal with Nike

World number one golfer Rory McIlroy now sponsored by Nike.

In a not-so-surprising announcement made today, Rory McIlroy is now officially sponsored by Nike, a deal supposedly worth close to $200 million over five years.

The announcement was made in Dubai with much fanfare. McIlroy’s image was projected onto a waterfall and he emerged to blaring music to give a short interview about his goals for 2013.

Nike’s status in the golf world took a blow with the downfall of Tiger Woods and they seem to have made a play to capture the next batch of talented youngsters in order to regain some lost ground. Obviously the acquisition of Rory McIlroy to the stables is the pick of the bunch, but they’ve also gone about sponsoring some other stars of the next decade or two including Americans Kyle Stanley and Nick Watney.

And with Tiger Woods back in the world number two spot, Nike must be grinning from ear to ear with the best two golfers on the planet on their team.
