Marc Leishman breaks the Aussie drought on the PGA Tour by winning the Travelers Championship.

Marc Leishman fired a final round 8-under par 62 to win the Travelers Championship and break a drought of Aussie victories on the PGA Tour. The victory was Leishman’s first on the world’s biggest tour and comes not long after his wife and 5-month-old son have been travelling with him on tour.

The victory breaks one of the longest droughts for an Australian winner on the PGA Tour in recent memory. In fact, many Australian golf fans were beginning to wonder if a victory was even on the radar with most Australian golfers struggling to get into contention to win this year. Certainly, few experts would have predicted Leishman to break the drought given his recent form.

Leishman was named the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year in 2009 and was mixing it with the best players for the majority of the year. Most assumed it was only a matter of time before the bloke from Warrnambool would secure a victory but despite giving himself some chances, he never quite got over the line.

The birth of his son Harvey has obviously changed the dynamics a little, and only had six top-20s to his name since the beginning of 2011.

Most will agree though that the victory could not have gone to a better bloke. I was lucky enough to find myself at one of the lead up events to the 2009 Australian Open, and Marc Leishman was happy enough to share a beer. He could not have been more friendlier and more down to earth as he recounted his love for the game of cricket and his Richmond Tigers.

A final round of 62 will put you in contention at most golf tournaments. Hopefully, Leishman has many more victories ahead of him.
