Jason Day joins Nike Golf and returns to golf Kapalua this week

Jason Day has signed with Nike Golf apparel but doubts remain about his persistent back injury as he returns to tournament golf.

Jason Day will be back in tournament golf mode this week when he tees it up in the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. The world number one will be sporting some new golf clothing after signing with Nike Golf over the holiday break.

Day announced the sponsorship with Nike and Lexus via his official Jason Day Instagram feed, but will keep his TaylorMade clubs in his bag after Nike decided to pull out of the golf equipment market in August last year.

“Joining Nike is a dream come true,” Day said in a press release. “The brand is synonymous with the world’s best athletes. I’m honored and can’t wait to be part of the team and working closely with Nike to take my game, and the sport of golf, to even higher levels.”

Day’s appearance at Kapalua will be his first tournament since the TOUR Championship in September with a back injury.

Doubts are being raised about Day’s fitness, knowing that a back injury can turn into a long-term problem. Greg Norman questioned whether Day’s hip rotation has led to this issue so early in his career and Martin Blake at Golf Australia is reporting that Day may be considering a swing change to protect his back.
