Jason Day goes back-to-back; wins WGC Dell Match Play: video highlights

Jason Day has won back-to-back tournaments after winning the WGC Dell Match Play this morning.

Jason Day is back on top of the world golf rankings after beating South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen 5&4 in the final of the WGC Dell Match Play at Austin Country Club.

Day lost the first hole against Oosthuizen but was one hole up three holes later and never gave the South African a look in, eventually cruising to victory.

Day revealed afterwards that his management team wanted him to withdraw from the tournament after injuring his back during his first match on Wednesday.

“I mean three of them tried to talk me out of it — actually four. Four of my team tried to talk me out of it. I’m like just don’t worry about it,” Day revealed.

“This week and Augusta, you’ve got to focus on trying to get healthy and come back strong. I’m glad I didn’t listen.”

Day has earlier edged past Rory McIlroy 1up in his morning semi-final match to book a spot in the final against Oosthuizen who comfortably beat Spain’s Rafa Cabrero-Bello 4&3.

Day’s putter was on fire for most of Sunday, particularly in his morning match against Rory McIlroy. The only bogey Day made on Sunday was on the first hole of the final match against Louis Oosthuizen. Other than that he made putt after putt, including this clutch par putt on the 18th to halve the hole and beat McIlroy 1up.

Day has now won two consecutive tournaments and an incredible six victories in his last 13 starts. Despite some concern over a back injury early in the week, Day looks very comfortable over the golf ball and it’s hard not to get excited about his chances at Augusta National in two weeks time.

“I feel good. But once again, I can’t get complacent with how I’m playing right now,” Day said. “I can’t focus on — it would be great to win Augusta. But I’ve got to make sure I get in and do the little things that count towards the big picture and that’s my prep in getting ready for that week.”

Well said. Let’s do the focussing on Augusta for him. It’s hard not to get excited with two Australians in such good form.
