Golf format: Split Sixes

This is the best golf game for a group of three.

Sometimes referred to by other names (cricket, American points) Aussie Golfer played this format recently and was reminded of how well it works at keeping each player in the game on every hole.

It works like this:
Each hole has 6 points up for grabs. The player with the best score receives 4 points, the 2nd best will receive 2 points and the 3rd player receives 0 points (4 – 2 – 0).

If two players tie for the best score, they receive 3 points each, the third player 0 (3 – 3 – 0).
If two players tie for second best score, points are allocated in a 4 – 1 – 1 fashion.

There’s an extra rule that is sometimes added to this game. If the golfer who wins the hole, does so by 2 shots or more over both opponents, the full 6 points is awarded (6 – 0 – 0).

Lastly, you may be thinking its a lot of extra numbers floating around but the points can be recalibrated in such a way to make it easier to remember the score. For example, if the scores are 12 – 8 – 6 after 4 holes say, this is the equivalent of 6 – 2 – 0. Or 10 – 8 – 8 reduces to 2 – 0 – 0.
