After novel events such as the GolfSixes and the Belgian Knockout, the European Tour is bringing the Shot Clock Masters to Austria this week that will feature another unique addition to the golf tournament.

In an era where slow play in tournament golf dominates discussion, the European Tour are staging a golf tournament aiming to speed up play.

The clue is in the tournament title. All golfers this week will be put in the shot clock for every golf shot – tee shots, approach shots, chips, putts, everything.

If the golfer is first to play they’ll get 50 seconds to play the shot from the time they reach their ball. If their second or third to play in their group, they’ll get 40 seconds.

And if they go over their time limit? they will receive a one-stroke penalty.

Logistically this will be interesting to see how it’s enforced and should make for some fun, faster golf to watch.
