Day, Scott and other big names confirmed for World Cup of Golf in Melbourne

The 2016 World Cup of Golf in Melbourne is shaping up to be a ripper with some big names confirmed to be at Kingston Heath in November.

Jason Day and Adam Scott will team up to defend their World Cup of Golf title to be held at Kingston Heath in November (23 – 27). Day and Scott have joined a host of other big-name players who are confirmed for the event to be played for the first time since 2013.

Day and Scott teamed up to win the event in 2013 at Royal Melbourne and kick-started a phenomenal stretch of golf  for Day, culminating in ascending to the top of the world golf rankings.

“The victory at the 2013 World Cup of Golf was a kick-start to a phenomenal stretch of golf for me,” Day said. “I am truly looking forward to the new team format with Adam. I really can’t imagine a better scenario than to represent Australia in our home country, with one of my good mates at Kingston Heath, one of my all-time favourite courses.”

The field looks like it’s going to be a beauty with the addition to other big names to the field – see full list of confirmed names and countries below.

Day and Scott will be joined in the World Cup of Golf field by American Bubba Watson (No. 6 OWGR), Englishman and Masters champion Danny Willett (No. 10 OWGR), Scotland’s Russell Knox (No. 19 OWGR), Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (No. 20 OWGR) and Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello (No. 27 OWGR).

Watson, who has not yet selected his playing partner, has been particularly keen to get back to Australia to play in this event.

“Anytime I can represent my country, I get excited. It is a great honour to put on the red, white and blue,” Watson said. “I’ve been wanting to make the World Cup of Golf team for a while. I love the team format, it is different to other events that we play and I know it will be a great experience.”

A member of the winning U.S. Presidents Cup team when the event was played in Melbourne in 2011, Watson also shared his love for the golf courses and the fans in Australia.

“I have visited Melbourne a couple of times. I love going to Australia the Sandbelt courses are awesome. They normally play super fast and you have to be creative to play well which suits my game. The fans are great and very enthusiastic. Australians are huge sport fans and that creates a special atmosphere. I can’t wait to get down there.”

The format for the 2016 World Cup of Golf at Kingston Heath will differ from the last event held at Royal Melbourne, for the better.

Organisers have ditched the individual event in favour of a team’s strokeplay event format which will see golfers play foursomes (alternate shot) on the first and third days of competition and fourball (best ball) on the second and final days.
