Davis Love finalises 2012 US Ryder Cup team

David Love names his captain’s picks to settle on his US Team for the upcoming Ryder Cup.

The 2012 Ryder Cup teams are now finalised after Davis Love III finalise the US team by selecting four players to go alongside the eight who had automatically qualified for the event at Medinah Country Club in late September.

Love went with Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Steve Stricker as his wild-card picks that were largely accepted as good choices. The most obvious guy to miss out was Hunter Mahan who has been playing good golf and would have been keen to make up for the heartbreaking loss in 2010 for the Americans.

Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk obviously bring a load of experience to the team. Stricker has played in two previous events while Furyk has played in all seven Ryder Cup’s since 1997. It will be Dustin Johnson’s second Ryder Cup and Brandt Snedeker’s debut at the prestigious event.

European Team captain José María Olazábal finalised his team last week by choosing Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts has his wild-card choices.

Team USA:
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Steve Stricker.

Team Europe:
Rory McIlroy (NIR), Justin Rose (ENG), Paul Lawrie (SCO), Graeme McDowell (NIR), Francesco Molinari (ITA), Luke Donald (ENG), Lee Westwood (ENG), Sergio Garcia (ESP), Peter Hanson (SWE), Martin Kaymer (GER), Ian Poulter (ENG), Nicolas Colsaerts (BEL).

The 2012 Ryder Cup will be played at the Medinah Country Club, Illinois September 25 – 30.

  • Based on OWGR rankings, the USA ranks sum to 158 (average ~13) and the Europe ranks sum to 226 (average ~19). That suggests the USA team is stronger.

If you only look at the best 8 players in each team, the USA ranks sum to 72 and the Europe ranks sum to 95, still suggesting the USA team is stronger.

Of course, I may have made a mistake with my additions, and the OWGR rankings don’t accurately capture current form anyway.

  • Rodney, love it! Great stats and as you say, OWGR doesn’t accurately reflect form but the Americans will surely go into the Ryder Cup as favourites. Somehow the Europeans have also fought very hard though – can’t wait.

  • I thought the USA team picked pretty much the form players for the Captain picks. Snedeker has been playing great as well as Johnson. The other 2 guys will give them valuable experience as they played in a few Ryder Cups.

Can’t wait for it to get start, should be great to watch.
