Andrew Dodt snatches victory in Thailand

Andrew Dodt has come from behind to snatch victory at the True Thailand Classic, a European Tour event held at the Black Mountain Golf Club.

Andrew Dodt fired his third consecutive round of 5-under 67 to finish one shot clear of home-town favourite Thongchai Jaidee and fellow Australian Scott Hend to claim the True Thailand Classic and his second European Tour title.

Earlier in the day, Hend looked to be in control of the tournament when the big hitting Queenslander went two shots clear after early birdies but was unable to make any more impact on the scoreboard.

Jaidee had an up-and-down closing holes and a playoff was imminent when he needed two putts to tie Dodt’s clubhouse leading score. But an unexpected three-putt handed victory to the Australian.

“I’m speechless – it’s just come out of nowhere,” said Dodt. “I played really well yesterday and today but I just didn’t think I’d come out on top. I knew I was playing well but to come out and win is just a dream come true.”

The victory is Dodt’s second on the European Tour, nearly five years after his first win at the Avantha Masters. Dodt lost his European Tour card last year and returned home to work on his game culminating in victory at the Queensland Open at Brookwater in August and winning back his European Tour card at Qualifying School.

“To be honest, losing my card two years ago was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. I went home last year, spent 12 months at home, played the Asian Tour again, found myself again, found my game and to be in the winner’s circle again – it’s unbelievable,” Dodt said.

The victory means that Dodt will shoot up the world golf rankings from his current position of 281 to somewhere inside the top 130 and gets himself an exemption on the European Tour until the end of 2017.
