    • This is a disgrace. Government promises all major sporting events will remain free to air. Yet another lie.

  • So you can only watch on pay TV-no wonder golf club memberships are struggling

  • What a joke, as a lad I remember watching The Open every year, the drama of the road hole and inescapable bunkers, The Shark and IBF. Now with a young son of my own I’d like nothing better than to share the experience with him by staying up late and watching it on the box. But no, the thieving leeches at Fox have cornered the market and out of principal we refuse to pay tv to watch sport. Golf is the looser here, we’ll watch Le Tour and cheer on Michael Matthews. I suppose Wimbledon will be next to go.

  • The 2017 Open Championship will be the 146th Open Championship, held 20–23 July at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.

It will be the tenth Open Championship played at Royal Birkdale, which held its first in 1954.

    • Agreed , major sporting events should be Free To Air
I loved watching the British Open, particularly the last day, but refuse to pay
exorbitant FOXTEL rates. I also just can’t afford it.

  • And we wonder why sports like golf are struggling for membership and participation. Perhaps if we returned events such as this to free to air tv more of our younger generation would be able to enjoy the magic the British Open provides. Not everyone can afford to pay for tv!

  • And why did Fox sport get $30 million of tax payer money in the last budget?

  • Watching major sporting events should not be the domain for just the “haves”.

    • Agree. Australia is a sporting nation and golf is struggling. Free to air for majors is a must. Unfortunaley this commercialisation of sports is doing long term harm for short term gain.

  • Once again my 85 year old mother is disappointed because of greed. She played golf for many years and now in the later years she can’t even enjoy the simple joy of watching golf on TV. Shame on you Foxtel – no friend of the people.

  • Love to get my hands on that thieving little grub Rupert Murdoch.

  • So sad we can’t watch this great event in Australia without paying for it. My family is keen on other sports now..they all played golf as kids with me.. we watched an event then we’d go and play. We’ve all given up our golf memberships due to lack of interest..my kids and I have gone back to hockey, baseball, AFL footy and basketball. Crazy for not having it on free to air..you sure are losing lots of golfers because of this..SAD.
