2015 US Open: Aussies looking solid after round 1

Golf Australia are on the fairways of Chambers Bay and they chatted to Adam Scott, Marcus Fraser and Cameron Smith after their opening rounds.

Like every US Open, golfers need grind and deal with adversity. The best at keeping a level head after making bogey are the players often near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, and the eight Australians in the field have done just that through the first round of the 2015 US Open.

With Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson making the most of the perfect morning conditions to post 5-under par and lead the tournament, all of the Australians have put together solid first rounds to keep themselves very much in the tournament.

In a sign that the future of Australian golf is in good hands, young Cameron Smith posted a fine even par opening round in his first ever major championship. In a Sign of his maturity, Smith rallied from an early double-bogey to card three birdies in his next five holes and give him a great shot at not only playing on the weekend but pushing up the leaderboard.

Geoff Ogilvy looked in good touch on the challenging Chambers Bay layout, as did Marcus Fraser who hit all but one fairway in his 1-over par round 71.

The best of the Australians was Jason Day who manages to get himself up and fighting at every major championship. Despite two missed cuts and fighting some health issues, Day looked at his dogged best today in his round of 2-under par 68 that included six birdies.

Adam Scott was also fighting a virus that has left him bereft of energy but managed to card a solid even par round. With Steve Williams back on the bag, Scott knows exactly what it takes to win a major.

“I wasn’t going to win it today but I could’ve lost it”, Scott said.

None of the eight Australians lost it today. Let’s hope for more of the same tomorrow.
