2013 Presidents Cup update: US and International Teams to be finalised next week

If you’re thinking of trying to make the 2013 Presidents Cup Team, you’ve got just one more week to do it.

The current standings for positions in the US and International Presidents Cup teams.

The 2013 Presidents Cup is just five weeks away (October 3 – 6, 2013) and the teams will be finalised next week.

As it stands The International Team to take on the US Team at Muirfield Village features two Australians, five South Africans, one Japanese, one Argentinian and one Canadian. Aside from sounding like the start of a bad joke the International Team is looking a little vulnerable against a power packed American team that will start strong favourites.

Adam Scott and Jason Day are the two Australian golfers in the team with perhaps just Marc Leishman the only other Australian who could force his way into the team with a good performance this week.

Team captains Fred Couples and Nick Price will name their two captain’s picks to make up the 12 player teams on September 4 and while Couples has a wealth of talent to choose from, Price has a much more difficult task.

Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Bubba Watson are all ranked just outside automatic selection for the US Team giving Couples a tough task in deciding who should miss out rather than who should be included.

Tim Clark is currently ranked 11th on the International Team standings and will be looking to force his way into the team this weekend, but given his good recent form he would be a shoe-in for one of Nick Price’s captain’s picks.

Who should Nick Price select as the 12th team member?

Marc Leishman is perhaps the obvious choice with good performances in majors in 2013 but Price may also be tempted to look further down the current rankings to Thongchai Jaidee,  George Coetzee or even someone like Geoff Ogilvy who has loads of match play golf experience.

Whatever the make up of Price’s team, they will be fighting an uphill battle to beat the Americans and claim only a second Presidents Cup win for the Internationals.
