2012 Talisker Australian Masters: 4 dark horses

Who could upstage the big names this week at Kingston Heath?

The favourites for the 2012 Talisker Australian Masters are reasonably straight forward, but there are a few other golfers who have a good chance of causing an upset this week. Starting with one of the elder statesmen of Australian golf, Peter Senior.

Peter Senior $41
Peter Senior is definitely considered senior these days but he can still mix it with his juniors. The two-time Australian Masters champion (1991, 1995) finished 15th on the Champions Tour this year and included 18 top-25’s from his 23 starts. As consistent and resilient as anyone else in the field, Senior is a sneaky chance of winning a third gold jacket.

Alistair Presnall $23

The Pres always seems to perform well when he comes back home and should be even more relaxed than usual after securing his US PGA Tour card after a few heartbreaking years on the Web.com Tour. Tee to green he’ll be fine at Kingston Heath, just needs the putter to be on and he could score a big victory.

Michael Hendry $51
Kiwi Michael Hendry has had a great year with a number of victories including the New Zealand PGA Championship earlier this year. Hendry has just come off two top-10 finishes including a fantastic fourth place at the Perth International and will arrive at Kingston Heath with confidence.

Scott Laycock $81

The 41-year-old Victorian always seems to pop up from time to time at big events but throws in a bad round to knock himself out of contention. But Laycock has good form right now finishing a tie for 13th at the WA Open and also had a reasonable week at the Perth International so he looks in good form this week.

  • Peter Senior is always a chance back on home soil. He’s had such a consistent year overseas on the Seniors tour.

He couldn’t quite get the victories but is still playing as well as ever.
