Classic matchplay: Player v Marsh
On a weekend where match play golf rules the roost, it is as good a time as any to check out this gripping battle between Gary Player and Graham Marsh at the 1973 World Match Play Championship at Wentworth.
The infamous altercation between Player and Marsh on the 35th hole is (caught in the video below), where Marsh pulls Player up for teeing up in front of the markers. Player is clearly not happy after losing the hole to Marsh.
The event was known as the Piccadilly World Match Play Championship back then, it’s better known today as the Volvo World Match Play Championship, won this year by Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.
This 1973 video is classic matchplay golf and the crowds are remarkable. Player went on to win this titanic tussle but Marsh triumphed in 1977 when it was known as the Colgate World Match Play Championship, beating Ray Floyd in the final 5&3.
