17-year-old golfer ties record with 9 consecutive birdies in pro tournament

India’s Rayhan Thomas has tied a record set by Mark Calcavecchia for the most number of consecutive birdies made in a professional golf tournament.

Indian teen golfer Rayhan Thomas has been touted as a future star for some time but he’s already made international headlines. Thomas made nine consecutive birdies during the second round of the Dubai Creek Open – a tournament that carries World Ranking Points and one he is defending champion.

Based in Dubai, 17-year-old Thomas used his experience on his home course to shoot a course-record equalling 10-under par 61 (which was set the previous day), carding birdies on holes two through nine.

“Yeah, it was fun. It was a good run of birdies. I just stayed pretty much in the moment and let it happen. It just felt natural,” Thomas said.

“I knew I could go low, especially round my home track where I know the greens so well. So I just let everything flow. I didn’t know about the record, but that’s nice. That’s pretty cool.”

For the record, the nine consecutive birdies in a professional golf tournament for world ranking points equalled Mark Calcavecchia’s achievement at the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, AND (thanks iseekgolf.com) Amy Yang at the Hana Bank Championship in 2015 and Beth Daniel in 1999.
